Why name a network once?

There’s a small Wi-Fi network in York that wakes up with a new name every morning. This is its website.

Most routers get a name when they’re plugged in, and that’s that. Ours has developed a habit.

The name might be a passing thought, a piece of unsolicited life advice, a headline, or a pun that probably should have stayed in the notebook. Now and then, someone sends in something too good to leave there.

Every name has to fit into 32 bytes. Once it’s actually broadcasting, we put it here. Yesterday’s goes into the archive.

If you found us in your network list

Yes, it’s a real network. Connect and you can browse DailySSID, send in a name, or sign up for the next one. It won’t give you general internet access. Think of it as a small noticeboard that happens to use radio waves.

You can also visit this site through your usual internet connection. You don’t have to be nearby to join in.

A note on the jokes

Clever is good. Needlessly cruel isn’t. We keep away from jokes about deaths, disasters and people having a genuinely awful time.

Suggestions get reviewed before anything goes on air. We’ll credit you if you want us to.
